A business may have healthy sales, regular customers and even report a profit, yet find it difficult to obtain bank finance.
Lenders assess more than earnings. They consider repayment capacity, existing commitments, financial conduct, documents and whether the requested facility suits the proposed purpose.
BLUCRED CREDIT INSIGHTS · 01Why do banks reject business loans?
Profit alone is not enough.
1. Cash flow and repayment capacity
A profitable business may experience cash shortages when customers pay late or funds are tied up in inventory. Lenders assess whether likely cash generation can support operating needs and future repayments.
2. Existing borrowing commitments
Current term loans, working capital facilities and other obligations affect the ability to take on new debt. Even regular repayment conduct does not mean there is enough surplus to service another facility.
3. Credit history and account conduct
Overdue payments and irregular account conduct may raise concerns. A good credit score is useful, but does not guarantee sanction.
4. Financial documentation
Financial statements, business bank statements, tax returns, GST filings where applicable and details of existing borrowings help lenders evaluate performance. Missing or inconsistent documents can delay assessment.
5. Purpose and facility suitability
Cash credit and overdraft facilities may fit recurring working capital needs; a term loan may better suit machinery or other longer-term purchases. A mismatch between purpose and facility can prompt questions during appraisal.
Preparing before applying
- Define the purpose and estimated funding requirement.
- Review cash flows and repayment capacity.
- List existing borrowings accurately.
- Organise clear, consistent financial records.
- Consider which facility structure aligns with the use of funds.
